New IBM TS2240 Incorporates LTO-4 Half-Height SAS Drive

The IBM System Storage TS2240 Tape Drive Express Seller Model (machine type 3580, SEO/part number 3580E4S) is a rack-mountable shelf unit designed to offer high capacity and performance designed for the midrange open systems environment and is part of the IBM System Storage TS2200 Tape Drive family. The TS2240 incorporates LTO IBM Ultrium 4 serial-attached SCSI (SAS) Half-High Tape Drive with a maximum tape drive throughput data rate performance of up to 120 MB/sec native data transfer rate.
With the use of the IBM LTO Ultrium 800GB Data Cartridge, the Ultrium 4 Half-High Tape Drive has a native physical cartridge capacity of up to 800 GB (1,600GB with 2:1 compression). IBM Ultrium 4 Half-High Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 3 Data Cartridges and read LTO Ultrium 2 Data Cartridges. In addition, the IBM Ultrium 4 SAS Tape Drive is encryption-capable and is designed to support Application Managed Encryption.
The TS2240 Express Seller Model uses a 3 Gbps single port SAS interface for a connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers. The new model will attach to selected IBM System x, IBM System p, and PC servers that support Microsoft Windows, Linux, and selected AIX systems.
The TS2240 Tape Drive provides a migration path from digital linear tape (DLT or SDLT), 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives.
In summary, the IBM TS2240 Tape Drive Ultrium 4 enhancements are designed to help improve performance and reliability, and include:
* Native data transfer rate of up to 120 MB/sec* Ultrium 4 tape cartridge native physical capacity of up to 800 GB
* 3 Gbps SAS attachment
* A 256MB internal buffer
* Application Managed Encryption support for Ultrium 4 SAS Tape Drive
* 8 KB cartridge memory with Ultrium 4 media
* Integrated electronics using IBM-engineered copper technology
