Without incurring additional costs

Open-E, Inc., developer of storage management software, announced the expansion of its current-generation Open-E IP storage management software to over 48 Terabytes without further costs.

The operating system Open-E Data Storage Software V6 (DSS V6), which has convinced thousands of customers with its innovative architecture, now offers more power than ever. Not only has the capacity limit been repealed, and users have no longer storage limits above the capacity of 48 TBytes (by purchasing Storage Extension Keys), but also significant improvements have been reached in context with updates.

The speed of failover and failback functionality has been significantly optimized. These features are especially critical for reliability and high availability of IT infrastructures and call for seamless failure scenarios.

"By removing the capacity limits above 48 TB we want to provide our customers with a low-cost expansion of their systems and with a response to the ever-increasing storage requirements in IT," said Krzysztof Franek, President and CEO of Open-E. "In addition, we increased significantly the efficiency of the Open-E DSS V6 in the areas of failover and failback to increase the availability of the systems of our customers."

Open-E DSS V6 received updates with additional language (Chinese) in both the Graphical User Interface and Help Functions, as well as updates for a variety of controllers which are now better supported. An OEM kit is also available for OEM partners to facilitate the use and customization of the storage operation system.

Open-E DSS V6 Fundamentals
The Open-E Data Storage Software V6 is a unified file and block storage management operating system (OS) that offers Network Attached Storage (NAS), iSCSI, InfiniBand and Fiber Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) functionality. The superior performance, security and scalability are offered at a fraction of the cost of alternative storage options. Advanced Features of Open-E DSS V6 include data and volume replication, snapshot volumes, automated failover for iSCSI volumes, WORM and NDMP.

Designed for versatile and flexible use in conjunction with a variety of hardware RAID platforms of the leading providers, Open-E DSS V6 allows the combination of NAS systems and iSCSI SAN systems as well as the integration of multiple network interface controllers including Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel. The Open-E DSS V6 supports logical volumes greater than 16 TBytes. The software is available with licenses for a capacity of 4, 8, and 16 TBytes. Optionally, the capacity can be extended in steps of 2 TByte with Storage Extension Keys up to 48 TByte. Above 48 TByte no additional costs arise for higher capacities.

Highlights of the Open-E DSS V6

  • New high performance, intuitive Web-based interface: The high performance of the Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the Open-E DSS V6 software facilitates the remote management of storage devices. The DSS-V6 can be easily managed with a Web browser from anywhere within the network.
  • Automatic failover for iSCSI disk: Open-E DSS V6 provides fault tolerance via iSCSI volume replication. The data from the primary server will be mirrored in real time on a secondary server. In the event of a failure of the primary server Open-E DSS V6 switches automatically and transparently for the user to the secondary server.
  • Volume Replication: Open-E DSS V6 offers both synchronous and asynchronous disk replication. Asynchronous volume replication is also possible via the WAN.
  • SCSI-3 Persistent Reservation: By Persistent Reservation commands Windows Server 2008 clusters are also supported now.
  • New SNMP-based monitoring system: Open-E DSS V6 enables users to quickly and easily monitor the system performance.
  • NDMP 4.0: Open-E DSS integrates the latest V6 Network Data Management Protocol 4.0 that is a network and protocol mechanism for monitoring backup and recovery as well as all other data transfers between primary and secondary storage.
