HyBlue IceLock SaaS Simplifies Laptop Encryption

Users can permanently delete HDD data remotely over the Internet in case of theft.

HyBlue announced immediate availability of IceLock, a new software-as-a-service approach to laptop data encryption. IceLock protects files and directories on a user's hard disks and can permanently delete data remotely over the Internet in case of theft. Unlike more complicated laptop encryption approaches, IceLock can be downloaded from the web and deployed in minutes.

"It's not enough just to build an encryption product, you've got to get the people who need it to embrace and use it correctly," said Michael Santarcangelo, Founder of Security Catalyst and author of the upcoming book, 'Into the Breach.' "The software-as-a-service model has the potential to make laptop data security a lot more usable by countless organizations who are under-protected today."

IceLock for Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Vista are available for a special introductory price of $49.95 per computer per year from now until July 1, 2008. The company will release a Macintosh OSX version of the service later in 2008.

"Laptop theft is a fact of life. Everyone should use some type of encryption to protect personal and customer data. The problem has been that data security has been too hard to implement," said Matthew Sutton, CEO of HyBlue. "Our goal is to make encryption easy. IceLock is data security for the rest of us."

Key features of IceLock include:
  • Remote Shut Off - IceLock protects data at all times, whether a system is connected to the Internet or not. In addition, if a device is reported stolen, IceLock can permanently delete or disable access to protected files when the machine connects to the Internet.
  • Web-Based Central Policy Management and Key Recovery - IceLock replaces the cumbersome policy management servers with a simple, secure, web- based service center that reduces implementation and operation costs, and provides complete audit reporting to reduce liability and regulatory exposure.
  • Protection against the Princeton 'Cold Boot' Attack - IceLock works the way mobile devices work, responding to state changes like hibernation or screen saver activation. IceLock's autonomous agent automatically removes encryption keys from memory whenever system state changes, reducing laptop exposure to RAM-targeting attacks like the Princeton 'Cold Boot' Attack publicized in February 2008.
