This Israeli start-up has also a deal with Sun.
GED-I's GSA 2000 can be used for data encryption to meet compliance guidelines, regulatory requirements and business optimization needs utilizing the IBM System Storage DS3300 and DS3400 storage devices. This solution will allow the DS3000 to be utilized as the storage element in an encryption environment that utilizes the GED-I encryption and encryption key management.
GSA 2000 is a storage security appliance, delivering unparalleled security to stored data in Real Time. GED-i Ltd presents the ultimate security for storage devices utilizing multi layered security implemented as GED-I Security Appliance (GSA) product family. Storage data security based on plain encryption is not satisfactory due to inherent vulnerabilities of storage devices such as: known data structure, huge volume of data, data recovery technologies and the retractable storage disks. GED-i Ltd is the only company that offers a suitable level of security to Storage Data, utilizing a unique 3 layered technology of standard encryption (AES 256) and proprietary methods that overcomes the inherent vulnerabilities of the storage devices.
"Achieving IBM System Storage Proven interoperability is another validation of GED-I's breakthrough innovation embodied in its storage security products. Our ability to work with multiple storage platforms now gives us the competitive advantage in truly heterogeneous environments", said David Saar, GED-I's Ltd CEO.
Our comments :
We have just discovered this storage start-up, founded in 2006 and based in Netanya, Israel. GED-i has recently opened an investment round A.
It has designed a storage encryption appliance to secure data residing on iSCSI or FC SAN, and to be sold by IBM. The company is also taking part of the Sun Startup Essentials program, a worldwide program to assist a growing community of start-ups, to use its products on Solaris.
Chairman, president and CEO of GED-i is David Saar, most recently the CEO of Vsecure Technologies, a network ecurity company.

Other founders are Elisha Atzmon, CTO, and Rony Shapiro. No one is known in the storage industry. But it’s not the case for one of GED-I’s members of the advisory board of the start-up, Nadav Kedem, who recently served as the Director of Research and Development at EMC Israel.
In fact, the company offers two products already available:
- GSA 2000, an encryption unit utilizing AES
- GKS 2000 to manage and control the ongoing use of the keys by the GSA 2000.
The encryption appliance is based on AES 256 with optional two additional layers:
- Geometric Restructuring layer: To hide and to fragment known and sequential data structures.
- Interference: To prevent data re-order back into known data structure.
This technology was originally designed for the maximum protection of data on storage devices. Therefore, as the media volume becomes larger, the protection gets stronger. This is one of the main advantages of this technology. The required key-information for the encryption/decryption process is saved, in real time, on an external key server disk. Without the presence of this device, it is impossible to decrypt the data. The company’s target markets are the high-end storage systems.
The other firms in storage encryption include Bloombase Technologies, BOSaNOVA, CipherMax, Crossroads, Digital Security International, DISUK, Hifn, NetApp (Decru), THALES e-SECURITY, nCipher (NeoScale), Siafu Software, and Vormetric.
