Sony Closes Hungarian Optical Disc Player Factory

Sony Corp. will discontinue production at its Hungarian manufacturing site in Gödöllö, Hungary as part of its initiatives to improve its profitability of overall business and efficiency in manufacturing.
Sony Hungária Kft., Gödöllö TEC, that manufactures Blu-ray Disc players and DVD recorders is scheduled to cease operations by the end of December 2010 and its operations will be transferred to the company's manufacturing site in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Mass production began at this Hungarian plant in January 1997 and has included the manufacturing of batteries, displays, DAV systems, speakers and Micro Hi-Fi systems.
"As we move forward into the HD era and DVD begins to fade, the worldwide demand for Blu-ray Disc players is expected to expand. By consolidating global production to achieve efficiency and offering customers higher value-added products such as Blu-ray 3D compatible Blu-ray Disc players, Sony aims to increase the competitiveness and profitability of its home video business", said the company
No material impact is anticipated from this realignment to Sony’s consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.

Our comments :
Established in June 1996, with 540 employees as of May 31, 2010, the Hungarian facility began making DVD recorders in 2001 and was currently focusing on single and HDD DVD recorders for the European market.
