Technology Alliance Between Nichia and Call/Recall

analysisJump right to our comments

To develop an ultra high-capacity optical disc recording system

Nichia Corporation of Japan and Call/Recall, Incorporated have reached a basic agreement whereby the two companies will jointly develop an ultra high-capacity optical disc recording and playback systems. The platform is designed around Nichia commercially available violet and blue laser diodes and Call/Recall’s one terabyte media. Nichia co-developed blue-violet laser diodes in conjunction with Sony and is used for Blu-ray. Call/Recall began synthesizing one TB materials for Nichia’s blue-violet laser diodes in December 2007, with first initial testing successfully completed in March 2008.

The demand for blue-violet recording and playback is expected to grow as the US market approaches the hard shut-off of standard analog broadcast on February 17, 2009. Digital High Definition requires more bandwidth and greater storage capacity.  Call/Recall anticipates being able to release a Blu-ray compatible disk as well as a backward compatible player able to read Blu-ray disks as well as Call/Recall’s higher capacity formats.  Call/Recall also intends to use the technology for the enterprise market for the archiving of corporate information.

Our comments :

Nichia is specialized in blue-violet laser diodes.
Call/Recall owns a patented, 2-photon 3D optical technology, invented by company co-founder Dr. Peter Rentzepis, to put currently 1TB on a standard 120mm, DVD-size media, then achieving recording densities as good as holographic technologies. It uses a special 'near-field' lens and fluorescent media technology to record hundreds of layers three-dimensionally.
