HP and Violin Demo Dual Socket TPC-E Benchmark Result

Faster response times than HDD storage systems

Violin Memory, Inc. has achieved a world record TPC-E1 benchmark for a dual socket server in partnership with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and HP's latest Proliant DL380 G7 offering. This TPC-E1 world record follows the HP blade server record posted last June, further substantiating the industry craze over flash Memory Arrays.

"As demonstrated by the TPC-E1 benchmark process, Violin Memory Arrays enable dramatic application acceleration of critical business applications such as SQL Server 2008, a recognized database leader for demanding low-latency business solutions," said Don Basile, CEO Violin Memory. "These results further validate the vision we share with Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison and the industry momentum towards flash Memory Arrays as the primary database platform of the next generation of data centers in contrast to the use of thousands of aggregated spinning disks."

The TPC-E1 benchmark simulates the workload of a brokerage firm's central database, demanding both low latencies and fast response times. It is utilized by vendors to demonstrate system solutions for realistic and representative workloads commonly addressed by large OLTP database systems.

"Establishing new levels of performance is important for the industry, and establishing those records on hardware configurations that have practical use in the real world is what is valuable to IT professionals struggling to meet user demands and budget realities," said George Crump, lead analyst at Storage Switzerland. "Solid-state memory solutions like Violin's are in a unique position to be an affordable, high performance alternative to adding dozens of additional spindles to HDD based storage arrays. It is good to see HP and Violin expand their benchmark records to the DL380 G7 'workhorse server' which will help broaden the potential audience for flash Memory Array solutions."

TPC-E Result

HP ProLiant DL380 G7 with 1284.14 tpsE and $250.00/tpsE on Intel Xeon X5690 3.4GHz (2 processors/12 cores/24 threads), 192 GB main memory with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.

Violin's Memory Arrays are changing the data center for companies like AOL, Brand.net, Tagged.com, Oracle, Juniper and HP through its patent-pending flash vRAID technology. The company was recently named a Gartner Cool Vendor and one of Silicon Valley's hottest companies by Lead411. Furthermore, Violin won two SPIFFY awards and was recognized as one of StorageNewsletter's 15 Most Promising Start-Ups.
