CommVault announced its membership in The Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems.

The Green Grid is chartered to develop industry-wide standards, measuring methods, processes and new technologies to improve overall data centre and business computing energy efficiencies. Membership in The Green Grid is open to IT industry professionals, including data centre managers and IT operations executives, with an interest in addressing global energy consumption issues.

As power, space and cooling requirements continue to grow in worldwide data centres, CommVault's participation in The Green Grid demonstrates the company's continued commitment to advancing greater energy efficiency within data centres. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that data centres consumed about 61 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2006, which is 1.5 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption, for a total electricity cost of about $4.5 billion. This estimated level of electricity consumption is more than the electricity consumed by the nation's colour televisions and similar to the amount of electricity consumed by approximately 5.8 million average U.S. households, or about five percent of the total U.S. housing stock. Federal servers and data centres alone account for approximately 6 billion kWh, which is 10 percent of this electricity use, for a total electricity cost of about $450 million annually[1].
