Viavi Enabled Kazan Networks to Accelerate Development of NVMe Over Fabrics

Selecting Xgig 1000 10/25/50/100 GE analyzer

Viavi Solutions, Inc. announced that Kazan Networks Corporation has selected the Xgig 1000 10/25/50/100 GE Analyzer for storage networking development and test.

NVMe over Fabrics enables disaggregation of compute and storage
without sacrificing performance

Kazan is a specialist in storage technology based on the NVMe over Fabrics standard. The company requires test capabilities that can keep pace with rapid market evolution, and the Xgig 1000 delivers with support for all predominant speeds and application-level protocols involved in next-generation storage networking. Viavi participated in the NVMe Plugfest at University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), Durham, NH, May 22-25, 2017.

NVMe over Fabrics is an innovation in storage technology, designed to enable faster access of solid-state media or systems over a network such as Ethernet or FC. The specification has been standardized by NVM Express, Inc. and its membership, which includes over 100 participating companies.

Kazan has developed what it believes is the industry’s fastest NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) bridge, designed to enable pooling of NVMe SSDs in a new, disaggregated compute/storage topology. Leveraging the scale and distance capabilities of Ethernet, it is possible for servers to remotely access NVMe SSDs, either within a rack or across the datacenter. Done correctly, there is virtually no performance lost in this configuration, while end users benefit through increased levels of storage utilization and ultimately lower TCO.

Viavi delivered the Xgig 1000 10/25/50/100 GE Analyzer including an NVMe (PCIe) test feature which enabled the engineering team at Kazan to accelerate the development, validation and launch of its offering to the market. Critical features for Kazan included: the ability to capture and interpret Ethernet and PCIe traffic in a clear and concise manner; and the ability to cross-correlate the traffic between Local NVMe and Remote NVMe-oF protocol analysis.

Viavi’s Xgig 1000 multi-speed Ethernet analyzer and its support of application-level protocols, such as iWARP, RoCE, RoCEv2 and NVMe over Fabrics, allows our engineers to quickly and precisely debug multi-vendor interoperability issues,” said Joe Steinmetz, CEO, Kazan. “In addition to their outstanding performance on the Ethernet side of our devices, Viavi’s Xgig 1000 PCIe Gen3 Analyzer and its ability to fully decode all NVMe traffic is a big win for us when debugging complex problems. Wrapping it all together, the ability to cascade Viavi’s Ethernet and PCIe analyzers with seamless, time-synchronized continuity in a single display trace simplifies the task of analyzing end-to-end NVMe over Fabric storage networks.

As a leader in test and measurement, Viavi is proud to support the advancement of NVMe-oF with Kazan Networks,” said Tom Fawcett, VP and GM, lab and production business unit, Viavi. “From optical networking to storage networking, we have consistently leveraged our experience with service providers, equipment manufacturers, enterprise IT and technology pioneers to ready test solutions for next-generation technologies precisely when they’re needed.
