HubStor Provides Ransomware Recovery for File Servers From Secure Cloud Archive Storage

Using point-in-time recovery

HubStor Inc. announced point-in-time recovery to help IT administrators recover from ransomware attacks.

According to Microsoft security research, ransomware is a global problem with 50% of the cases occurring in the United States. By archiving files to the cloud with the company’ solution, organizations increase their protection and ability to recover from ransomware.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that blocks access to files until a sum of money is paid. Businesses are increasingly the target of ransomware attacks. The malware can encrypt vast amounts of data on enterprise file systems, placing an organization in a vulnerable position and crippling their ability to conduct normal business operations.

To protect against ransomware, IT leaders need to improve their strategy for protection of mission-critical, confidential, and valuable information. The common challenge is that traditional backup approaches can be expensive and problematic for companies that keep large amounts of data.

Ransomware is an enormous and accelerating problem that can cost any organization dearly, either in terms of ransom payments or data loss,” said Michael Osterman, principal analyst, Osterman Research. “The ability to recover rapidly to a known good state, while simultaneously minimizing the spread of the infection, is one of the best ways to recover from a ransomware attack.

There is an increasing appetite to use the cloud for backup and data protection,” said Stephen Tuckwell, director, operations, HubStor. “Unlike a pure backup product that only does data protection, our approach with HubStor now offers clients the data protection and recovery advantages in addition to seamless storage tiering, data-aware analytics, search, and data governance.

The solution is a hybrid cloud storage solution that protects and tiers data to a secure vault in Microsoft Azure. Organizations use the company’ solution’s storage tiering and archiving abilities to lower storage costs and preserve business data for legal and regulatory compliance. The solution includes recovery features that enable IT administrators to restore file servers and shares from the cloud. It rebuilds folder structures, recovers access controls, and maintains the original metadata.

With the point-in-time recovery feature, IT professionals can restore their data to a healthy state from the cloud in the event of a ransomware attack. Moreover, as a secure object storage solution with encryption, redundancy, and integrated authentication, the solution limits malware’s attack surface within the organization’s IT infrastructure by tiering inactive data from primary storage to the cloud.

Many of our clients have experienced ransomware first hand in their past,” said Greg Campbell, CTO, HubStor. “We are excited about adding data protection and recovery features that can help our clients be more resilient to attacks.
