French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission Implements Rozo Systems

To get software-defined scale-out NAS

Rozo Systems SAS, provider of software-defined scale-out NAS storage solutions, announced that the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has selected RozoFS as an alternative for next generation storage.

The product was selected because it offers fault tolerance while delivering performance, preserving hardware independence and working on standard file systems.

RozoFS is a scale-out NAS that delivers fault tolerance and high performance on all data sizes, a crucial requirement in  HPC applications. The basis of its superior fault tolerance and performance are a disruptive erasure coding technology that works fast and efficiently on small files and on sequential workloads.

“We were very interested in exploring and help advance the unique set of features of Rozo Systems’ storage solution,” said Jacques-Charles Lafoucrière, the head of Scientific Computing Complex Department at CEA. “What we found is that the Rozo solution is a good fit for the CEA applications because of its exceptional reliability. Our team was also pleasantly surprised by the high performance delivered on commodity servers.”

RozoFS is based on patented erasure coding technology, the Mojette Transform, which delivers data protection equivalent to triple replication with only 50% overhead. The erasure-coded data is protected against the failure of a storage node and the failure of multiple disks on the same node. This solution is superior to RAID since it provides improved data availability, does not require expensive RAID controllers, and eliminates the performance decline of RAID rebuilds. It also eliminates downtime when adding or removing storage nodes.

“The CEA performs very advanced work so it is a great proving ground for our RozoFS technology,” noted Pierre Evenou, CEO, Rozo. “We are very excited by the opportunity to demonstrate our leadership in performance and reliability in software-defined scale-out NAS in the most demanding HPC environment.”

Comments

Rozo continues its market penetration at its own pace, securing regularly large accounts who have strict high demanding needs in I/O performance and data protection. Media and entertainment plus HPC represent two market segments for the firm that confirm an interesting market traction.

RozoFS competes with Lustre and GPFS/Spectrum Scale solutions with less complexity, higher performance and greater data integrity and protection.

More recently Weka.io appeared on the market and competes against Rozo. The company is recognized for high performance in NFS and SMB associated with the fundamental data protection layer based on erasure coding technics named Mojette Transform that introduces a new approach.

Rozo is the only scale out NAS French vendor. No other companies are able to deliver these two characteristics at the same time: performance in I/O and in protection. Some try but have recognized rapidly that a performance play is not a capacity play.

And Rozo confirms that large companies are buying from a small vendor for innovation and uniqueness of the solution not available elsewhere.
